user experience: campaigns

DIY- Sustainability

1. why is this issue pertinent and timely?
This is issue is pertinent and timely due to the environmental awareness that is going on. Specifically speaking to the campaign of "Reuse, Recycle, and Reduce".

2. what are its causes?
Sustainability helps DIY-ers have efficient options to what they are building. It also helps the environment by not using harmful chemicals, or processes that go on within making materials and objects. By reusing/cycling/ducing it reduces their carbon footprint.

3. what are detrimental effects to individuals? to greater society?

Without knowledge of using sustainable objects, it is basically hurting the environment and human kind by time of detrimental effects. We may not see the effects now, but we will later in life. By being more aware of being sustainable, it will reduce these effects.

4. what are preventative measures?

Some preventative measures to help the detrimental effects from happening is by being more aware of possible materials that are being used. Specifically to the DIY culture it is important to see what their fixes are causing. Possibly by, where their tools were made, or more simply, how much energy their tools produce.
I also think that since the DIY culture is already accustomed to reusing that helps a lot within the preventative measures.

5. how does this issue relate to your sub-culture?
This issue relates to the DIY culture by their interest to reusing and recycling objects and materials. Sustainability is an important topic to think about when it comes to the DIY culture also because the less experienced DIY-er may not be educated on this specific topic.

6. what organizations have a vested interest in this issue?
There are a lot of different website and groups online that have vested interest in this issue, but one specific thing I kept seeing were sustainable DIY homes built out of recycled materials.

E Bay is also a big contributor to how the idea of reusing things can be a positive thing. The campaign of 1 dress, 365 days which shows the idea of using one dress for everyday in a year by buying vintage accessories rather than buying new products that are being made everyday.

7. what organizations have a vested interest in your sub-culture?
There are many books and again online groups and website that have catered to this sub-culture by putting websites up about ideas and new ways to of being apart of the DIY culture.
Etsy is a large contributor to the DIY culture, as well as the blog Apartment Therapy. It has examples of different projects and ideas for the home. Also the book/website ReadyMade, which has a lot of projects for the DIY-er but they are all objects you could have around the home.

8. what public service campaigns have previously addressed this issue?

Sustainability by itself has a lot of public campaigns. Examples being: Toyota, and Fed-Ex.
Toyota is all about it's energy saving cars, and Fed-Ex is also about saving time but also being efficient with their transportation choices. Specifically having a more air efficient airplane transporting goods from country to country.

DIY-Passing on the tradition
(teaching children to do it yourself.)

1. why is this issue pertinent and timely?
Due to Generation Me coming of age it has become a pattern to just go out and buy what you need, rather than finding an alternative to how you can get an object. I feel that due to this pattern it is becoming less known that children of today really won't know how to hem a skirt, or simply find a stud in the wall.

2. what are its causes?
Passing the traditon of DIY will cause the community to be more aware of how to be more efficient and sustainable as a whole, rather than have a group of them, such as today, it would pass the values and knowledge down for a better way of coming to solutions, such as fixing something.

3. what are detrimental effects to individuals? to greater society?

Some detrimental effects of not having DIY being a tradition can be more about how the environment functions. To a society, it could be that since we look to new and improved products, versus fixing the ones we have that means producing more materials to make those products, which also means a larger carbon footprint as a society. To the individual it can put a big damper into money issues. Buying new products versus fixing something can almost guarantee that you can save money (but not always!). Another example would be painting, I can paint my room for the cost of a paint can, but I can also pay someone to do it for the cost of probably more expensive paint, and labor, but not necessarily a better job.

4. what are preventative measures?
Some preventative measures would be teaching children at a young age how to do things by hand, or for them selves. Painting, using tools, building. It could be taught at schools. I know from my research I saw that due to the economy and time issues with parents and children, that parents want to spend time with their children by just being them, rather than teaching them something. So that by teaching them in school could possibly be a solution.

5. how does this issue relate to your sub-culture
?
This issue relates to my sub-culture by being efficient and sustainable. Keeping the knowledge alive and vibrant is essential to the DIY-ers. They are willing to learn and be apart of things.

6. what organizations have a vested interest in this issue?

Not many organizations have vested interest in this issue. However I did see that a school oversees was starting to put more DIY projects into their curriculum. Due to the lack of knowledge that children learn from their parents about doing it themselves.

7. what organizations have a vested interest in your sub-culture?
There are many books and again online groups and website that have catered to this sub-culture by putting websites up about ideas and new ways to of being apart of the DIY culture.
Etsy is a large contributor to the DIY culture, as well as the blog Apartment Therapy. It has examples of different projects and ideas for the home. Also the book/website ReadyMade, which has a lot of projects for the DIY-er but they are all objects you could have around the home.

8. what public service campaigns have previously addressed this issue?

There are no specific public service campaigns about this issue, it is more about getting children involved with little projects. But, not specifically passing the tradition on of DIY.

Bike Commuters- Be more energy efficient.

1. why is this issue pertinent and timely?
Being more aware of one's carbon footprint is becoming more and more popular with a certain type of person. So, making a campaign to be more efficient by riding their bike pushes saving energy. There is also a high rise in gas prices so pushing to save money by riding your bike is very timely.

2. what are its causes?
Being more energy efficient helps reduce carbon footprints. By commuting to work everyday it would help cut the costs of gas and cut to amount of waste we put into the environment.

3. what are detrimental effects to individuals? to greater society?
The main detrimental effect to the greater society is not knowing when the worst is going to happen to the environment. Also the costs of everything right now are rising, except for what people make at a job. To the individual it can deal with money, but riding a bike is a stress reliever, by exercising.

4. what are preventative measures?
Some preventative measures would be to be more aware of what alternative transportation methods there are. Busing, carpooling, and especially biking. Also being aware of the detrimental effects would help as well.

5. how does this issue relate to your sub-culture?
This issue relates to my subculture due to how they go about their transportation means. They would be the "ambassador" of this campaign and would want people to be apart of their subculture to make the environment a better place for everyone in the years coming.

6. what organizations have a vested interest in this issue?
There a several online groups and especially schools and cities that have their own specific campaign about going out and getting active. So there is definitely a lot of information about this topic available, just not so sure it's in a campaign type of form.

7. what organizations have a vested interest in your sub-culture?
Organizations that have vested interest in my sub-culture are more along the line of bike related organizations/websites/ or stores that have wanted to get the word out about bikes in general.

8. what public service campaigns have previously addressed this issue?
As far as public service campaigns go there are have been several movements about getting active and showing interest to be efficient by using a bike. One I have examples of and saw within KC recently was Matt Urlaub's degree project last year, by getting the word out by creative posters, and instillation's throughout KC's Main street.
